Year One Calendar


JULY

Interns:  Welcome!  We are excited to have you as part of the Magnolia family!  Mark your calendars for upcoming dates in August and throughout the year.

To complete this month:
  • Paperwork/application materials to intern program.
  • Paperwork for employment at your site.

Mentors: Thank you for being a strong member of the Magnolia family and willing to work with us to support our new teachers.  It is going to be a great year!

To complete this month:
  • Mark your calendars for upcoming trainings and dates.
  • Turn in any paperwork/application materials to intern program.

AUGUST

Interns:  preservice includes 7 full days of MAG 101: Introduction to Teaching and Leadership and 7 days of on-site staff inservice.

To complete this month:
  • Intern Self Assessment Checklist on DAY 1 and final day of preservice session.
  • Meet your mentor!
  • Complete Intern School Preparation Checklist by meeting 8+ times with your mentor before the start of school.

Mentors: preservice includes 2 full days of mentor training and 7+ days of on-site staff inservice.  

To complete this month:

  • Write an introduction letter to your intern (will be done during training)
  • Meet your intern!
  • Use the Intern Self-Assessment Checklist with your intern to meet 8+ times before the start of school.
  • Complete Intern School Preparation Checklist by meeting 8+ times with your intern before the start of school.
Remember to fill out the Collaborative Meeting Log to record your meetings!


SEPTEMBER

Interns Begin MAG 102: Teaching Methods and MAG 104: Teaching Practicum 1.  Meet with your mentor the first day and first week of school.  Begin weekly meetings with mentor and observe your mentor teaching 1x. 

To complete this month:
  • Meet with mentor the first day of school to reflect.
  • Complete Reflection Journal #1 about your first week of school.
  • Meet with your mentor the first week of school and weekly after that. 
  • Observe your mentor teach a class using the Intern/Mentor Classroom Observation Protocol.  Have a follow-up conversation to share your observations.

  • Schedule a time for your mentor to observe you.
  • Watch the observation video and choose a clip you want to focus on.  Meet with your mentor to share observations and have a reflective conversation.

Mentors:  You have a Full Day Mentor Training this month to help prepare you to complete a successful observation with your intern.  Ideally, you will complete this observation this month to give your intern feedback and support sooner rather than later.

NOVEMBER

Interns:  Begin MAG 103: Prepartaion to Teach EL; continue MAG 104.  Continue meeting with your mentor weekly and use Reflective Journal #2 to comment on your year so far and your plans moving forward.

Mentors:  Continue to meet weekly with your mentor.  Use their Reflective Journal and your notes to support new ideas and encourage them as we get into the last stretch before winter break!

DECEMBER

Interns:  Continue MAG 103: Prepartaion to Teach EL; continue MAG 104.  Continue meeting with your mentor weekly and use Reflective Journal #3 to think about  classroom management.

JANUARY

Interns:  Begin MAG 105: Reading & Writing; continue MAG 104.  You are almost half way through the year!  Complete your Midyear Reflection and start working on TPA Task #1 which will be completed by June.  Reflection Journal #4 helps you think about equity and needs in your classroom.

To complete this month:
Mentors: Help your intern kick off the new year and wrap up first semester.  They will also need support starting TPA Task #1.

To complete this month:
  • Continue to meet weekly with your intern and support TPA Task #1
  • Use Reflection Journal #4 as a point of conversation during one of your meetings.
  • Potentially facilitate a Practicum Group Meeting.

FEBRUARY

Interns:  Continue MAG 105 and MAG 104, begin MAG 106: Healthy Environments.  This month your mentor will also conduct another observation with reflective conversation afterward.

To complete this month:
  • Continue meeting with your mentor.
  • Continue working on TPA Task #1 which will be complete by June.
  • Fill out Classroom Observation Pre-Visit form to give your mentor before they observe you teach.  
  • Schedule a time for your mentor to observe you.
  • Watch the observation video and choose a clip you want to focus on.  Meet with your mentor to share observations and have a reflective conversation.

Mentors: You'll be conducting a second observation and reflective conversation with your intern this month in addition to weekly meetings. 

To complete this month:
  • Continue to meet weekly with your intern and support TPA Task #1. 
  • Potentially facilitate a Practicum Group Meeting.

MARCH

Interns:  Continue MAG 106 and MAG 104.  This month a program supervisor will also conduct an observation to evaluate your progress thus far.  Reflection Journal #5 focuses on time and paper management.

To complete this month:
  • Continue meeting with your mentor.
  • Continue working on TPA Task #1 which will be complete by June. 

Mentors: Interns are observed and evaluated by a program supervisor this month so you may want to focus on helping them prepare for and debrief that process.   You have a Full Day Mentor Training this month to check in and make sure everyone is on target as we draw near the end of the year.

To complete this month:
  • Continue to meet weekly with your intern and support TPA Task #1
  • Support your intern for program supervisor observations.
  • Use Reflection Journal #5 as a point of conversation during one of your meetings.
  • Potentially facilitate a Practicum Group Meeting.

APRIL

Interns:  Continue MAG 104.  This month you will observe an off-site teacher and share your thoughts with your mentor.

To complete this month:
  • Continue meeting with your mentor.
  • Continue working on TPA Task #1 which will be complete by June

Mentors: Interns are conducting an off-site observation this month and may need help finding a teacher and setting up their observation.  Also, will your intern be done with TPA Task #1 by June?

To complete this month:
  • Continue to meet weekly with your intern and support TPA Task #1
  • Potentially facilitate a Practicum Group Meeting.

MAY

Interns:  Continue MAG 104.  This is the final, full month!  Congratulations!  Reflection Journal #6 helps you think about your curriculum--good timing as we draw toward the end of the year and tackle state testing.

To complete this month:
  • Continue meeting with your mentor.
  • Finish working on TPA Task #1 which will be complete by June. 

Mentors: Great job supporting your intern!  Now, it is the final crunch of state testing and wrapping up the year in the classroom and in the intern program.  Remember, TPA Task #1 needs to get finished this month!

To complete this month:
  • Continue to meet weekly with your intern and finish TPA Task #1
  • Use Reflection Journal #6 as a point of conversation during one of your meetings.
  • Potentially facilitate a Practicum Group Meeting.

JUNE

Interns:  Finish MAG 104 and wrap up TPA Task #1, Reflection Journal #7 (what has been learned and what is left to learn), and fill out the final assessments and evaluations.  Congratulations, you made it!

  • Turn in TPA Task #1.

Mentors: Celebrate!  You, and your intern, have made it!  Turn in all paperwork and final forms and then get ready for summer!

  • Complete Formative Assessment of California Teachers (FACT E-1)
  • Complete Intern Program Evaluation
  • Complete Exit Interview
